I am a graphic designer currently in my final year at The University of Salford. I enjoy working with print and all hand made and drawn. Look out for Mutton Boon.

Here are the signs designed so far for the characters I have created to hold. The idea is you slot these into the model like a photo to give the impression that the character is holding this sign. I wanted to be really playful and over the top with the type and plan to do a lot more.

Here are the characters with their bases. I’m not 100% on the colours yet and want to try other colours but I plan to print them onto a thick card and slice lined into them so they can stand on the bases.

These are the other characters created. The first character is like a homeless person holding signs, the idea for this character is to slice lines into the character in order to slide the hands on and then slice lines in his hand to attach the protest sign. I originally drew this character with the intention of bending him around the waist to make him sit upright however I decided to draw a sort of quilt to make it seem like he is sat down, I wanted to make each character stand or sit different to distinguish what type of personality they have.

The second character is my favorite, I wanted him to be an office worker with an over the top character as if he had cracked a little.

Here are three of the character that I have created. Here they don’t have any colour because by this point I never gave them any. Each of the characters have a base in which they would be placed onto while holding the signs and each is designed to suit the character it’s for. The first one shows a hill billy style character with a bit of a scruffy image. The second is suppose to be a more violent protester who would be in the thick of fighting and the final is simply because I wanted to do a character with a ridiculous beard. I never ended up using this character because given the drawing I would have to bend the arms which wouldn’t be any good for the ink once printed plus the space to put a sign was too restrictive to create any interesting signs.

After a while I came up with the idea of characters that would be made out of card and stand. At first I planned to attach protest signs with paper clips but after a while I changed this which I shall soon show.

I eventually plan to screen print these or lino print but I couldn’t resist making a few full colour to see how they look.

Here is a quick view of the initial sketch development with the characters I used in my project. I would just jot these down while traveling on the but for a few minutes.

I was quite keen on eyes and having large ones. As the project grew on I began to really enjoy drawing hands and spend a fair bit of time drawing them.

Starts with the very basic ones and moves up to define more features until I got the ones I will upload shortly.

A few attempts at putting text into one of the illustrations of the homeless character. One reads “trapped in this maze through no fault of my own.” and the other “This is no home.” I think I prefer the second one.

While I wont be printing in full colour I couldn’t resist doing a few in full colour just to see how it would look. I also messed a little with the eyes just to see how they look. I quite like the smaller eyes, quite creepy looking.

Here are a few tweaks to the blood drip idea. The text is more loose on this one and the sword has been removed because it was stealing focus.
